Appreciative Inquiry at the University of Virginia

Welcome to the Center for Appreciative Practice at the University of Virginia!

Check out all the great photos of the Center-supported retreat, “Coming Full Circle:  4th-Year Reflections on Humanism in Medicine.”

Please join us for the next Appreciative Practice “Picnic on  November 16th.  Ryan Quinn, co-author of Lift:  Becoming a Postive Force in Any Situation will be our guest speaker.  These monthly gatherings allow us to learn from each other as we navigate culture change using appreciative inquiry.  For more information on the Appreciative Practice Picnics, click here.

Congratulations to Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery!  On October 28, more than 70 members of the TCV team and its stakeholders met for a 1-day Appreciative Inquiry process around: “Teamwork, Collaboration, Value: A Pathway to Excellence.”  The day was long, but many outstanding ideas were generated, and excitement for the future is high.

Congratulations to the UVA School of Nursing!  On October 5 & 6, SON faculty, administrators, staff, students, health system and community partners gathered for a strategic planning summit, with an appreciative edge.  With facilitators from the Center for Appreciative Practice, 130 participants completed a 4-D strategic planning process.  We hear everyone’s exhausted, but it was well worth the effort.

We are now offering monthly Introduction to Appreciative Inquiry workshops designed to help  your team get up and running with AI.  This is also an excellent opportunity to “get your feet wet” and learn a little more about this exciting tool for culture change.  This 2-hour workshop, lead by Center for Appreciative Practice faculty, is an opportunity for work teams to learn more about Appreciative Inquiry and how it might be used in their settings.  Participants will receive an overview of AI at UVA, the principles of AI, and the elements of the 4-D cycle.  They will also have an opportunity to conduct Discovery interviews and to begin mapping their department’s “positive core.”  Participants will also learn about the resources and opportunities available to them through the Center for Appreciative Practice.  Our next workshop date is:

Tuesday, November 17 8:00 – 10:00 a.m.

If you would like to attend one of these introduction workshops, please contact Cathy Keefe-Jankowski.  For more information about this and other workshops, click here.

(If you have not signed up for the mailing list, please do so by emailing Cathy.)

The next Appreciative Practice Quarterly Luncheon will be on December 4.  This is a great opportunity to hear what’s happening with AI throughout the Health System.  We hope you’ll join us!
